Who in their right mind buys a white rug when there’s little people in the house?
Me.
In a moment of insanity (call it the Ikea syndrome) I decided that my house would not be complete without a gorgeous – and expensive – white wool rug.
I lugged it home, laid it on my bedroom floor (the only place I felt would be protected from their Vegemite fingers) and admired its beauty.
Mr Bean, who has that male affliction of being unable to to recognise household and wifely change (‘Yes darling I was blonde when you left this morning and now I’m a brunette!!’), surprised me by noticing the new floor covering.
“A white rug, are you mental?’ he said, ’You know that’s going to last all of five minutes.’

It’s not until you welcome children that you realise how precious life is. Suddenly there is so much to live for. Every day is a new adventure and exploration in life. That first smile, their first steps, the first time they say those cherished words, ‘I love you mummy’.
The thought of missing out on any of it is horrible. So when I heard that a school friend had been diagnosed with breast cancer, aged just 35, I resolved to quit complaining.
So what if I’m a little bit sleep deprived and the house is a mess – get some perspective.
I was shocked to hear that Alison was not alone in her breast cancer diagnosis. Many women Alison’s age and younger are diagnosed. I’ve always thought it was something that wouldn’t be an issue until later in life, but that’s not the case.
Alison generously agreed to speak about her experiences since being diagnosed two days before Christmas 2010. Alison is mum to three gorgeous sons and her strength and positive oulook in the face of adversity is incredible.
You can read Alison’s story here.
